Since becoming a Mom in October of 2005, I've become extremely aware of the items I have in my home. We're told to protect our children from choking hazards, stairways and so on, but are we ever told to protect them from the chemicals we bring into our home through household cleaning and laundry products? I always thought if I bought the “fragrance free” laundry items it would be fine and I also thought my child isn’t at risk because it doesn’t matter what I’m cleaning with, just as long as he doesn’t get into it. The fact of the matter is not only is he at risk, I’m also at risk.

As a stay-at-home Mom I learned an interesting fact that made me think about the cleaners I have. This fact made me get rid of all the toxic cleaners I had in my home. I read a study that said, women who work at home have a 54% higher death rate from cancer than those who work away from home. This study concluded that this was a direct result of the increased exposure to toxic chemicals, many of which were found in common household products. I work at home as a homemaker; I fit in that job description.

I switched to non toxic green cleaning products so I could feel safe and happy knowing that my family and I are not at risk to be exposed to toxic cleaners. Along with being non-toxic, they are also, natural, free of harsh chemicals and fumes, biodegradable, hypoallergenic, Earth friendly, not tested on animal and the kicker, the containers are recyclable as well as the dryer sheets.

What makes me comfortable is that I can clean a bathtub and know that my son is safe from any harsh chemicals left behind. I can do laundry with the confidence that it’s okay for him to suck on his blanket or roll around on his crib sheets. Because I know he is safe from invisible coatings or fumes left behind. I’m passionate about these products because not only are they safe for my family, but they are making a difference in the environment.

My girlfriend, whom was a skeptic, tried a sample and has since then changed her mind. She uses non toxic green cleaning products on everything, including the grime left on the back of her leather car seat from her sons tennis shoes. Everything else she tried didn't get it off, but her non toxic green cleaning product did!

Sloan Barnett -I am here because a number of years ago my son was at lunch with us, my husband and I had taken him to lunch, my little boy Spencer. We notice that he was coughing repeatedly, a lot, I mean just unendingly so we took him home and I did what most mother would do I gave him a little cough medicine and I toll him to lie down and I realized very quickly that his heart was racing out of his shirt.

Well 25 minutes or so the heart was still racing and I got really scarred so I said to my Husband you know what, I am not waiting anymore we are going to the emergency room. We were escorted immediately to a room where he was put on oxygen and started an IV drip of steroids. We spend the next 2 nights in the ICU. You can imagine my husband and I were very scared.

We started to ask ourselves a lot of questions. How did this happen? Why us they were calling it respiratory airway disease. Which is just basically a precursor to asthma. They don’t want to call it asthma right out front. And I see all of you nodding your heads because I know what I am going to hear is that you have all been through the exact same thing and you know how truly frightening it is.

1st Concerned Mom - My oldest son who is 4 is suffering from severe allergies and we had to have his tonsils and adenoids remove last year. He had one of those terrible coughs like Sloan was talking about with her son.

2nd Concerned Mom - My daughter who is 2 years old, she has been sick for the last 5 weeks she has had this horrible cough. Last night she was up and I was up for about 3 hours because she kept coughing and I have given her tons of different medicines and it not going away.

3rd Concerned Mom - I had an incident just this past week we were visiting with my mother in Texas and my son, my youngest son - every night he was having these coughing spell, coughing then one night he just had a all blow out asthma attack.

4th Concerned Mom - I have a 5 year old daughter and she has asthma no one in my family has a history of asthma and no one in her father’s family has a history of asthma.

Sloan Barnett - I start to ask the doctor a lot of questions. They said why are you surprise asthma is the number 1 reason kids come to the emergency room ay New York Hospital. Wow, that surprised me. Then I started to ask my parent, my in-laws, turns out that four generations back on both sides of the family nobody had ever had any pulmonology issue what so ever. No food allergies, no asthma nothing, Well then why, why now? Why this adorable – he’s really cute you gotta meet him. I mean really why him, right! We realized there is genetic and environmental, it’s one or the other. Clearly it wasn’t genetic so it had to be environmental, so we started to do our research that’s what mothers do.

When we don’t how to deal with things we start to look for answers. And we found out some pretty scary thing, which I don’t know if all of you know. How about the fact that 1 out of 13 school age children in America has asthma. That’s a big number then I found out the fact that the asthma rate for children under the age of 5 has risen 160% from the year 1980 to 1994. That’s pretty big too and I started to learn that after doing a lot of reading there is a direct correlation between the toxin found in our common household cleaner and the rates of asthma and allergies.

I started to think how I was going to spread this message because it is a message about our home, it is a message about asthma, it is a message those little lungs in those little people also it is a message about the planet. And I wanted a way to get moms together to talk about it because I think really we are the change makers so to speak. We are the ones that can really make a difference. And I had this thought that if we all got together that not only could you all hear the message but you could help me spread the message.
